My name is Meena, and I was born and raised in the Bay Area in California. I am currently an intended Mechanical Engineering major. Outside of class, I am involved in Duke Business Society and other engineering ventures. In my free time, I love to watch all sorts of television (my favorite show of all time is Avatar: The Last Airbender), participate in physical activities, cook mediocre food, and make jokes.
My love for television and movies started when I was young, watching the shows on Disney channel and going see to the latest animated Disney masterpieces in the theater. I chose to take this class to explore the layers behind what roped me into the world of video entertainment. I have always known about Disney’s massive influence on American society, but I have never been able to fully comprehend why and how it attained such a role.
This semester, I would like to understand the pattern through which Disney alters the original stories behind the movies and how these changes impact American society. I hope that by comparing and analyzing the works that we will explore this semester, we will be able to decode whether there is some sort of formulaic method through which Disney has been able to consistently produce influential hits in the past century. I’m particularly excited for when we discuss The Lion King and Aladdin as they are two of my favorite Disney movies.
