Introduction Post

My name is Luke Chaikovsky from Irvine, California. I am an avid sports fans who supports Los Angeles sports teams and Manchester United. I love to play basketball, baseball, soccer, and football. I've been doing intramurals across multiple sports and have a job on campus refereeing volleyball and basketball. I am pursuing a major in public policy in hopes to eventually attend law school after Duke. Durham has been a completely different dynamic from my hometown. Aside from the drastically different weather, the strong pride of the city that each resident possesses has been a really intriguing aspect of the city.
Being from Southern California, I frequently visited Disneyland and grew accustomed to Disney being an avid part of my life. Just as my dad was a raging Disney fan, Disney has always been present throughout my community. Because of this, I was instantly intrigued in a class that would break from the norm of analyses of classic texts, and instead tried to dissect a more modern and interesting media with the same critical lens. While my English experience was intense yet amazing in high school, this course would allow me the most interesting source material that I will ever have encountered.
This semester I hope to enjoy the source material of some of my favorite classic Disney movies, including Tarzan and Hercules. While the Disney versions of these films are very much softened to appeal to a family audience, the original texts are riddled with dark motives and experiences. It will be very interesting to gain a greater understanding of my favorite Disney characters through the analysis of the original stories. Because of Marvel's inclusion into Disney, any excuse to watch more Marvel movies is definitely a major selling point of this course. Especially as we approach the conclusion of the Avenger's story arch, it will be very interesting to analyze this through a college course.
