My name is George Rateb, and I was born in Cairo, Egypt. I immigrated to the United States when I was 4, initially moving to Charlotte, North Carolina. I moved around the Charlotte area a lot for a while until finally settling down in Waxhaw, but I've never really moved away from the Charlotte area in general other than living in Egypt and visiting in the summers. Right now, I'm currently planning on majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a double major in Economics. However, I really do switch my intended major on the weekly, so ask me again another time and you'll probably get another answer. Outside the classroom, I love playing piano and composing music, playing and watching soccer with friends, traveling as much as I can, and binging shows on Netflix. Currently, I'm also on an IM soccer team here at Duke and am part of a piano ensemble called Devilish Keys.
Similarly to most people, I grew up on Disney. In fact, Disney shaped a lot of my perception of what American life was like as I was watching Disney before and while I was adjusting to life in the States. If I recall correctly, I've watched upwards of 80-90 Disney films, so I would consider myself to be an avid fan. My favorite movies definitely include Aladin, The Lion King, and Mulan. The music is definitely what makes the movies so magical for me, but the relatable themes and incredible production certainly don't hurt. Hot take: Animal Kingdom is the best Disney park, Magic Kingdom is overrated, ask me about it later.
I've always been better at STEM courses growing up, but enjoy the idea of writing and language. I think the way we try and communicate to each other is fascinating, and the different styles by which we do so can often be really cool to take apart. Grammar has never been my strong suit, and some of the things I hope to gain from this course include improving my grammar and diction, and hopefully become more well-spoken. I think I'm decent as I am, but there's definitely plenty of room to grow, so I'm excited to see where this class will take me!
