Hello
everyone, my name is Lucas Carter, and this is a brief introduction about
myself. I'm 18 years old, and I was born and raised in Garner, NC (a town just
south of Raleigh). My father works at Duke as an IT analyst for the Fuqua
School of Business, and my mother is a physical therapist at Rex Hospital in
Raleigh. She’s French Canadian, but didn’t teach me or my sister (ChloĆ©, a
senior in high school at the moment) French while we were growing up. So now, I’m
trying to learn and am actually going to France this summer to participate in
Duke in Aix-en-Provence, a 6-week French immersion program. I’m super excited
for that.
Some of
my hobbies include photography/videography, watching/playing sports, and
watching Netflix (I know, very original). I play volleyball for the club team
here at Duke, and while it’s my first year playing, I enjoy it a lot. I’m also
tenting for the Duke-UNC basketball game, which sucks but also doesn’t. I’ve
been trying to make short videos of different things surrounding tenting; right
now, I’m working on one for the UVA game. Anyways, that’s a little background
on me.
I signed
up for this course primarily because I heard through word of mouth that it’s one
of the better Writing 101 topics. Also, it just seemed the most interesting to
me out of all the choices, and the first week or so of class has made me happy
that I chose this one. I like Disney, and while I’m not a crazy fanatic about
it I’ve seen most of the films. I think the idea of analyzing the effects of
Disney, both through the media they create and their company, is really
interesting and important.
This
semester, I’d like to study the different messages that Disney movies convey,
and whether those messages are a good or bad thing. I’d also like to discuss how
Disney has adapted pieces into their own, and whether the changes they make are
good or not. I’d also be interesting in studying how Disney has changed over
the years, and how their marketing or political leaning as a company has
changed.
