Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a witch, with the definition of witch, being a woman with magical powers. She is definitely not they stereotypical evil witch. She does have magical powers, even though she does not use them for evil purposes. Mary Poppins is, however, mean and stiff to the children, but that is due to her personality and not through her powers. I suppose she is kind enough to include Jane and Michael in these Magical adventures, but then she denies that they had ever happened to the children, which just makes them confused. However, I do like how after every adventure that there is a clue that it had actually occurred and was not just a dream. I think that one of the reasons why Mary Poppins denies the fantastical is because the existence of magic is supposed to be kept and secret and is supposed to stay between all of the magical people, but I guess kids can know as well as long as they don’t tell their parents. Because Marry Poppins denies their adventures it causes the kids to not tell their parents, so I guess the secret of magic stays safe.

I think that Disney chose this story because of all of the magical elements in it, and because each chapter basically has its own fairy tale story intertwined into the story line. However, it is hard to tell why he chose this story with Mary Poppins being the main adult. Mary Poppins is not a good example of a grown up for children because she is vain and harsh with the children. If I was a child, I would not have wanted Marry Poppins as a nanny. It is interesting though that Jane and Michael do really like having Mary Poppins as a nanny despite her negative traits, and they are sad that she leaves both times. I think that it is a little sad that the first time Mary Poppins leaves the kids realize that something is wrong because Mary Poppins is being nice to them. Then the second time she leaves she pays for them to go on the merry-go-round and they also sense that something is up because she never normally buys them stuff.

I also think that it is surprising that the Banks have so many people working for them, but their house doesn’t look that nice even though that was the deal if they had four kids. Also why did Mrs. Banks really want four kids as opposed to a nice house if she just has nannies watch over them instead of herself? I was also very surprised when Mrs. Banks had a fifth child. I also don’t understand why Mrs. Banks had a nanny to take care of her children all of the time when she seems to stay at home all day anyways. It was also kind of pathetic when Mrs. Banks was on her own and had to take care of all the children herself, but then she couldn’t handle it. Then she simply sent her children off to the park by themselves so she could take a nap, which is obviously not very motherly.
