Mary Poppins became a character that I found myself being annoyed by at some points in the book. The way she spoke and acted towards the kids gave me an uneasy feeling and made me wonder how in the world this was considered a children's book. When I first started reading the book I decided I was going to take a "childish approach" as I thought that the book was meant for children. What I mean by this , is that I wanted to read the book and take it as it is like a child would most likely read the book. This means very superficial analysis and overall quick understanding of what is going on in the plot. While taking this approach, I became very very annoyed at certain points in the book and could not understand how a child would enjoy reading this.
Mary Poppins was rude to everyone around her, very manipulative, mean to the children at certain points, and always had that stuck up reaction to whatever she did. Whenever the kids asked her simple and legitimate questions about what was going on around them, Mary Poppins either made a big deal about how they could not comprehend what was going on, or she completely ignored them. I never had a nanny but I imagine that the sole purpose of a nanny is to educate the children she takes care of and help them as they explore the world around them . Mary Poppins had a very belittling attitude towards the children at many points in the book and over all that made me come to dislike her.
Mary Poppins simply was not a lovable character and I could not understand how on earth this could be considered a children's book. In addition to the rude main character, every other character that was introduced in the book was either extremely obnoxious about a certain aspect of their life, or was always repeating the same thing and yelling. Every sentence that came out of certain character's mouth was in all caps or surrounded by exclamation marks.
Now, many people could argue that the author chose to write in this way in order to highlight certain aspects of adulthood and childhood, however, is a child really going to worry about this very subtle allusions to life? As a child I would expect to pick up this book and enjoy reading it, and that was definitely not what I experienced. Over all, I didn't enjoy reading this book which can all come down to the perspective I decided to take when I started reading, nevertheless, I think we can all come down to the conclusion that this book was not meant for children.
